Get To Know The Staff At DCCU – Do You Remember Carla?

DCCU staff
DCCU staff superstar, Carla

If you’ve been around DCCU for a long time, chances are that you remember Carla. She’s one of our longest term employees – this year we celebrate Carla’s 35th anniversary with DCCU! These days, not too many people can say they’ve been working for the same organization for that long. It’s certainly something to applaud. We are so lucky to have Carla and her amazing personnel skills that make the DCCU family strong for the benefit of all members.

We’re excited to continue this series on our blog, wherein we highlight staff members from all walks of life and all  branches of our credit union so you can get a glimpse into the inner workings of our credit union family.

Here’s Carla, our VP of Human Resources.

What are the duties, functions and responsibilities of your job?

On the paperwork side, I administer payroll and benefits, 401k plans, insurance, unemployment and workers’ compensation for all employees. On the people side, I’m involved in hiring, terminations, reviews and promotions. I supervise the training and development manager; I participate on the strategic senior management team, the planning committee and Think New Thoughts committee. These committees allow me to give input all the way from the strategic level to the day-to-day operations level. It’s great to see how the different levels complement each other and produce results.

What’s a typical day like?

A good portion of most days are spent responding to employee requests in any of the areas listed in the question above. During payroll weeks, I spend half a day preparing and submitting payroll and then processing the general ledger entries. Other days I’ll be working on strategic initiatives or meeting with the training and development manager to work on new ideas in the training area. I also attend regular team meetings for the committees I’m involved in during certain days of the week or month.

What are your interests and in what way does this job satisfy them?

One of my interests is helping people sort out situations and come to workable conclusions. This is one of the favorite parts of my current position at the credit union. Almost every day there’s a situation where I’m able to assist an employee by providing ideas and tools to help them handle a situation.

Another interest is being able to make a positive difference at work. My job allows me to provide input and implement change regarding employee salary and benefits. I am able to look out for our employees’ best interests. This is very rewarding.

What jobs and experiences have led to your present position?

I started with Dane County Credit Union when we had five employees. This allowed me to be involved with all aspects of the credit union. As we grew, the positions I held in member services, accounting, branch operations, auditing and salary and benefits administration all provided insight into employee relations that I used as stepping stones towards the human resources role I have now. We now have 65 employees.

What do you like most about this company?

The fact that they allow employees to grow as individuals, as well as in their positions, and also [allow employees to] try new positions if they are qualified to do so. No position is stagnant.

Why do members choose DCCU?

We provide them a hometown feel and have a conversation with them to figure out how we can best serve their needs. Sometimes we discover ways to help them without them even knowing it was something they needed in the first place.

What’s your favorite DCCU product or service?

eBanking–it allows me to do my transactions whenever I want, as well as keep track of my finances when it’s convenient for me.

If you could close your eyes and be anywhere on earth when they opened, where would you be?

Floating down a canal in a gondola in Venice, Italy.

What is the longest trip you’ve ever taken?

I’ve been to Germany via Iceland. Germany was amazing, and the stop in Iceland was really cool–great Icelandic wool clothing!

Do you volunteer anywhere?

I volunteer on the credit union advisory council for Centro Hispano. This is a new initiative between Centro Hispano, Madison College, CUNA and the five Madison-area credit unions. It’s a seven-week  program called Career Igniter, and it prepares Latinos to be viable candidates for hire as tellers at local financials. We provide support and feedback for the program, and when we have career opportunities we are able to interview, and possibly hire, the candidates that complete the program. It’s a great way for the credit union to be more involved in the Latino community and provide great bi-lingual member service. This also helps us  get the word out about our Latino-focused services like DREAMer loans and Quinceañera financing so we can help more members reach their dreams.

As Carla highlighted throughout the interview, DCCU’s focus lies in serving our community. We’re set on serving credit union members in Madison, Dane County and its surrounding communities, no matter what; whether your financial issues are big or small, please don’t hesitate to call our Member Service Center or stop in at your nearest branch–we’re more than happy to sit down and chat.

BTW, have you met Amanda and Katie yet?
