DCCU Cares about Friends of the State Street Family

Volunteer with Dane County Credit Union
DCCU Cares

One thing that makes our community special is how people come together for the common cause of making Madison a better place to live. As a credit union in Madison we have come up with a way to help YOU get involved in giving back to our awesome community. Throughout the year Dane County Credit Union organizes volunteer events through our DCCU Cares program. It’s an easy way for our members and staff to help make a meaningful impact where we live and conduct business.

Our next DCCU Cares event is being held on June 27 in conjunction with Friends of the State Street Family. The main objective of this group is to provide care and basic needs to the more than 400 homeless citizens of Madison. Tami Miller, the group’s original organizer came up with the idea while volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital. Through her work with homeless citizens she recognized the urgent need to connect people with services and meet their immediate basic needs.

Friends of the State Street Family was initially started as a Facebook group that provided a clearinghouse for resources and information. They have since grown to a group of more than 800 volunteers and have become a project of the Center of Community Stewardship, the status of which allows the group to accept financial contributions through a certified 501(c)3 organization.

As the Food Run Coordinator for Friends of the State Street Family, I first got involved in December of 2013 when I was looking for a local non-profit for my kids to volunteer with.  As I researched local organizations it was hard to find opportunities in which younger children could participate.  Friends of the State Street Family is a great organization for kids to volunteer with because all help is welcome and needed. There is something for everyone to do!

There are many ways you can get involved with the upcoming DCCU Cares event sponsored and hosted by Dane County Credit Union including donating items, preparing food, and serving the meals.  To donate food, please sign up here.  To help serve the meal, on June 27, we need at least 8 volunteers who will meet at Philosophers Park (at the top of State Street near the Capitol) at 2:45 p.m. to set up, serve at 3:00 p.m., take down & clean-up is completed by 4:00 p.m. All family and friends are welcome to help out, including children.

The number of people we serve has gone up significantly over the past year, consequently supplies have dwindled. To further help with this cause, DCCU is having a supply drive for necessary items that are used for the weekly food runs as well as basic necessities for individual needs.

Please consider donating from this list of supplies:

  • Heavy duty plates
  • Plastic forks & spoons
  • Styrofoam bowls
  • Clam shell to go containers
  • 55 gal garbage bags
  • Lysol wipes
  • Plastic gloves size large
  • Styrofoam or toss away cups
  • plastic bags (grocery bags)
  • Napkins
  • Paper Towels
  • NEW socks (men’s & women’s)
  • NEW underwear (men’s & women’s)

If you are interested in being a part of this volunteer event or have questions, please email me at [email protected]. Friends of the State Street Family is a grassroots, 100% volunteer non-profit organization that helps our homeless & hungry in Dane County.

Thank you for your consideration and participation!
